ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

A fixture in Detroit since 1852

Founded in 1852 in Detroit, the 154-year-old Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone began rapid-fire expansion in the late 1970s that took the firm to New York, Florida, Canada and even Poland. With a client list that includes more than 20 percent of the Fortune 500 -- including seven of the top 10 -- Miller Canfield has no doubt solidified its presence as one of Michigan's leading law firms. The impressive credentials of the firm's clientele are matched by those of its attorneys, several of whom have held high-profile positions in places such as the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Economic Council and the Michigan Department of Treasury before entering private practice. That's not to mention the four Michigan Supreme Court justices, a U.S. District Court judge and the two U.S. senators. Oh, and then there are the 79 attorneys named to the 2007 edition of The Best Lawyers in America -- more than any other Michigan firm.

Miller Canfield SURVEY SAYS

Early responsibility

Aspects of Miller Canfield life that please associates include early responsibility, interesting projects and the opportunity to work with a "diverse group of people" who are both friendly and smart. A junior litigator gushes, "This job surpasses all my expectations for my first year at a law firm. I look forward to going to work every day&. I work with smart, interesting people and get challenging and exciting assignments." Another insider offers a similarly glowing review: "In the public law department, the work is extraordinarily dynamic. Public finance is the central focus, but clients also seek general counsel-type work that involves a broad menu of policy-related work, even for the newest associates." At least one associate, however, would like to see the firm become more "competitive outside the state."

Tips from the inside

Intimate

For such a big firm, Miller Canfield maintains a rather intimate summer program. In 2005, for example, the firm attended on-campus interviews at only three schools: Michigan State University, the University of Michigan and Wayne State University. And although the nearly 400-attorney firm has 15 offices in the United States and abroad, summer associates generally stay close to the firm's Detroit headquarters. By keeping the summer program small, the firm eliminates competitiveness among students vying for a permanent spot and helps "provide a supportive environment enabling [the] summer associates to excel."
