ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Jersey's oldest firm

McCarter & English, New Jersey's oldest law firm, has been a major player in that state for 120 years. It is also New Jersey's largest and most prestigious firm, recently winning the rank of "top law firm" by New Jersey Business Magazine. Even though two-thirds of its 337 attorneys are located in the New Jersey office, McCarter & English is gaining a considerable presence in other states throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. In addition to Newark, the firm has offices in Baltimore, Hartford, New York, Philadelphia, Stamford and Wilmington.

McCarter & English LLP SURVEY SAYS

Hiring and pro bono

The hiring process at M&E isn't particularly intense, however it can be competitive-particularly for local law students due to the fact that the firm receives applications from "most of the top third of the second-year law class from New Jersey schools." Not that the firms limits itself to the Garden State--recent summer classes have included students from Harvard, Michigan, Georgetown, Boston College, Emory and Syracuse. The firm tends to "seek out law students who have a personal connection to the city of the office for which they are applying."
