ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Aisle be seeing you

Formerly known as Federated Department Stores, Macy's is one of the largest department store chains in the United States. The company has around 850 department stores in 45 states (plus Puerto Rico and Guam). Stores carry the Bloomingdale's and Macy's names -- each of which dates to the mid-1800s -- but at one time the company's family included Famous-Barr, Filene's, Foley's, Hecht's, Kaufmann's, Lord & Taylor, L.S. Ayres, Marshall Field's, Meier & Frank, Robinsons-May, Strawbridge's and After Hours Formalwear. All of these have either been divested or converted to one of the two main brands.

SURVEY SAYS

The day-to-day

According to insiders, the main job of salespeople seems to be to sell customers on plastic. One source says "You are expected to really push the Macy's credit card. You are also expected to push clients to go online to say they received 'outstanding customer service'." Many contacts complain about poor morale, high turnover and management issues. A source in Arizona says, "This company appears to care little for the very assets they rely on to boost sales-the sales associates! More emphasis on the customer but opposite consideration for employees, who usually are competent professionals."

Tips from the inside

Presentation is everything

Bloomingdale's and Macy's each has its own dedicated career site, but the bells and whistles included thereon are pretty similar. Anyone seeking employment can use the search function and, if warranted, apply for a position by completing the online application and attaching a resume. The organization offers paid internships -- Macy's and Bloomingdale's offered 350 of them in 2007 -- in some stores and in corporate offices during the summer.
