ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Ed. note: On March 6, 2012, Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps combined with McKenna Long & Aldridge, with the combined firm taking the name McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP. The below profile refers to the pre-combination Luce Forward.

Beginnings and milestone

The firm now known as Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps was founded in 1873 by Moses A. Luce, one of San Diego's founding fathers. (Among other contributions, Luce drafted the charter for San Diego.) The multi-specialty firm began a statewide expansion in 1994, in which it added five new offices up and down the coast.

Luce Forward SURVEY SAYS

The community and the people

Most of our contacts say Luce Forward is a "great firm to work for." A midlevel gushes, "As an associate at Luce, I am able to be significantly involved in large and small matters. Further, nearly all of the partners with whom I work are great mentors." An O.C. insider boasts, "The work that I do is fun and the people that I work with are great mentors." Says one San Diego lawyer, "It's all relative, but if I have to work at a law firm, this is the place to be." That said, the enthusiasm falls just short of unanimous. As one member of the grumbling minority complains, "I have done little more than summarize transcripts. It is tedious and boring. I need additional tasks to make the work in any way fulfilling."

Tips from the inside

Well-rounded wanted
One associate describes the successful candidate at Luce Forward as "professional" and "social." According to another lawyer, "We look for the top quarter of the class at top-tier schools and strong ties to San Diego more than anything else." Another insider insists that "after basic qualifications are satisfied (top-tier school or top small percent of lower-ranked school), personality is everything! Please have one." In addition, "Unique interests (not related to law) and life experiences are valued." But at least one lawyer thinks the firm could lower its standards just a touch (or, better yet, raise its salaries): "We usually look too high and get over-qualified people who leave to go for more money elsewhere."
