Awards and honors

Lowenstein Sandler's corporate department was recently ranked as the No. 1 corporate department in New Jersey in Chambers USA--America's Leading Lawyers for Business. Not to be outdone, its litigation department has won national acclaim from The National Law Journal, which recently named one partner as one of New Jersey's top litigators. SURVEY SAYS

Formal training gets high marks

The formal training, though "geared primarily toward more junior associates," gets high marks from most insiders. All new associates go through a "one week training program" to learn how the firm works. There are also "great in-house workshops" covering issues such as time-management, writing, and working with firm support staff. Lowenstein also encourages associates to attend CLE seminars. One associate notes that "every time I've asked to attend a seminar, the firm has approved my request and paid for the seminar without blinking." The firm also gets high marks for its mentoring program, which associates describe as "awesome" and "incredible." "Mentors are great for asking questions you might not otherwise feel comfortable asking, like vacation or sick time," says one attorney. The firm "takes the mentor-mentee relationship seriously," notes another attorney, and works to promote "real congeniality among associates, counsels and directors."

Tips from the inside

Competitive hiring process

"The callback process was grueling," says one associate. Others agree. There certainly is a competitive hiring process," says another. What makes it so tough? One associate notes that "The firm looks for hard-working, bright, talented individuals." But grades and work experience are equally important. "The firm tends to get the cream of the crop from the New Jersey schools," states one attorney. While "numbers and pedigree matter," the firm is equally interested in the personalities of its candidates, and "looks for people who will be compatible with the culture here." Far from being a "cookie-cutter firm," Lowenstein "also looks at diverse backgrounds & and for people who are very personable."
