Building toward No. 1In the retail home improvement ring, Lowe's Companies is winning the fight. The second-largest such chain in the U.S. behind Home Depot is the weekend destination of millions of do-it-yourselfers, all aiming to outmodel their neighbors' kitchens, bathrooms and gardens. Each Lowe's carries a wide variety of products, up to 40,000 in total. Building materials, lumber and paint make up 20 percent of sales, but receipts from appliances (9 percent) are growing handily. Those plus all manner of plumbing (fixtures and supplies comprise 10 percent of sales), millwork, flooring, lighting, tools and cabinets generated just over $48 billion for the company in fiscal 2008, a figure just a tick higher than the previous year.
