ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Tops in Tinseltown

Loeb & Loeb (not to be confused with Leopold & Loeb) has nearly a century of experience behind it and can boast of holding a prominent role in Hollywood and L.A. history, having helped set up the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Union Bank of California. Since those early days, Loeb & Loeb has grown into a national firm, with offices in New York, Chicago and Nashville. Loeb & Loeb has also expanded its practice offerings, most recently through its March 2008 addition of an emerging media and technology group. The firm already operated notable practices in media, technology, intellectual property and advertising; the nascent 20-lawyer group will focus on the needs of new media and technology clients.

SURVEY SAYS

Survey says

The best things about Loeb & Loeb, according to insiders, are the "A-list clients," the "diversity of matters" and "the opportunity to get more experience early on." One associate touts the "big-firm prestige and sophisticated quality of work, with the camaraderie and opportunities to participate of a boutique." Says another contact, "I think the work at Loeb & Loeb is as fulfilling as can be provided by a big firm." In keeping with the firm's emphasis on early opportunity, don't expect a lot of handholding and formal training. Associates are entrusted with a lot of "serious, substantive work with autonomy" but "not a lot of feedback." Worries one junior lawyer, "I'm never sure where I stand or how I'm doing. They could be perfectly pleased with me, or I could be fired tomorrow. I have no idea."

Tips from the inside

Hot spots
Loeb & Loeb looks for a mix of good grades and good character in new hires, associates say. According to one lawyer, "Applicants who are confident and know what they want out of life seem to get hired and succeed here. Good grades and educational pedigree also don't hurt." This view seems to reflect the firm's own approach to recruiting, which emphasizes academic accomplishment, confidence and a drive to succeed. The firm says it seeks "bright, energetic team players who view Loeb & Loeb as a good match to their career aspirations and who have the ability and desire to assume a significant amount of professional responsibility." Candidates should have "academic credentials demonstrating success at the nation's top law schools, strong research skills and writing background, leadership skills and assertiveness."
