ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

2004 a year

Lathrop & Gage had a big year in 2004. Partner Mark "Thor" F. Hearne II served as national election counsel to the successful Bush-Cheney campaign as well as general counsel to the governor-elect of Missouri and two U.S. congressmen. And in August, the firm opened a branch in New York City that will focus on intellectual property--which is fitting since Lathrop has the largest IP practice of any Kansas City-based firm.

Also in 2004, a team of Lathrop & Gage litigators garnered a $4.2 million jury verdict for their clients, who were individual plaintiffs in what has been called the largest cattle fraud case ever. Lathrop's clients invested substantial amounts of money in what they believed to be thousands of premium cows, which were to be purchased and raised by a Kansas City-based livestock company. As it turned out, the company was a sham and its owners were in fact running a Ponzi scheme and had only bought a fraction of the cattle they had contracted to raise for the plaintiffs.

Lathrop & Gage SURVEY SAYS

Firm culture

If you're easygoing yet conscientious, you might like life at Lathrop. "Lawyers are very social and the atmosphere is laid-back; however, people know how to work hard." While some feel the firm has recently "shifted from friendly and laid-back to more billable-hour and bottom-line oriented," most agree that "there is a general camaraderie among associates." "Everyone in our office knows each other by their first name," reports one associate. Though "lawyers do not tend to socialize on a regular basis," one associate reports that "impromptu gatherings or lunches are well-attended." With an atmosphere that is almost universally described as "relaxed and collegial," it's clear that "the friendly and open culture of Lathrop is one of its strongest assets."

"Lathrop & Gage is not a 'face-time' firm," asserts one associate. "The firm is great about allowing members and associates to define their own work schedules and working from home or on the road." Another attorney agrees, stating "pressure to bill seems minimal, although I have heard of department heads making the rounds to prod newer associates whose hours are low." Still, it's not like Big Brother is watching. "No one cares what time you are at the office as long as you are billing enough hours and getting the work done." The 1850 billable hours requirement is considered "reasonable for a large firm."

Tips from the inside

Well-rounded summer associates

The best way to get hired at Lathrop is to summer there. "Most new associates are hired from summer clerk classes," reports one associate. "The summer associate interview process looks for candidates that will fit with the firm's attitude." Attorneys agree that "it is competitive at the interview stage" and that "this firm looks for skilled applicants with a proven track record of success." Make no mistake--Lathrop wants the cream of the crop. "Academic credentials are a must to obtain an interview," one insider notes, though "the firm does not seem to hesitate to bring in candidates from lesser schools." Personality is also a key factor here. One source says "an applicant has to be able to get along with people." A litigation associate puts it succinctly: "the typical Lathrop associate is best described as 'well-rounded.'"
