ABOUT THIS COMPANY:
Firm historyEstablished nearly 125 years ago, Lane Powell has been a fixture in the legal scene of the Pacific Northwest since the days of the Gold Rush. Now with a wide and diversified practice that includes both international and local clients, Lane Powell currently has 170 attorneys in five offices in Washington, Oregon, Alaska and even in London. The firm has corporate law, litigation, labor and employment, intellectual property and a variety of tort-related practices. The firm also has a special practice in aviation law.
Lane Powell partners have a long history of being appointed to prestigious offices. In October 2004, the firm's white collar criminal defense and government enforcement chair Steven Ungar was appointed as one of five Oregon Lottery Commissioners. No fewer than six of the firm's partners have been appointed to the bench on either the state or federal level. And seventeen of the firm's lawyers were included in the 2005-2006 volume of The Best Lawyers of America.

Getting Hired
Tips from the inside
Local ties
In order to get a job at Lane Powell, it's best to start as a summer associate. "Almost all summer associates are given offers to work here permanently," says one attorney, but it can be "difficult to get a summer associate position here." Further, the firm can be "slower than most at asking people for interviews and for extending offers." Academics definitely count, as does the candidate's school, since "the firm generally seems to seek out people from top law schools." However, it "has also hired locals from second-tier schools." It's crucial that the candidates be a good fit with the other attorneys: one source notes that "everyone is pretty happy and personable, so that is who we are looking for." Lane Powell definitely likes locals, and "ties to the local communities are a must."
