ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Forty-four ways to say "red"

L'Oreal is the world leader in cosmetics, bringing a rosy glow to faces across the globe. With 25 global brands in four product divisions priced to suit every pocketbook, L'Oreal boasts a compelling market presence in 130 countries. L'Oreal is the only cosmetics company available in every distribution channel; this means that mass-market retailers, hair salons, department stores, pharmacies and mail-order channels all carry L'Oreal brands. In 2007, 45 percent of L'Oreal products were sold in Western Europe; 25 percent were purchased by North Americans and 29 percent were sold in other parts of the world. In order to keep new lipsticks, glosses, liners, balms and all the rest forthcoming, more than 3,000 people work in research and development centers. As a pioneer in the ever-expanding science of looking good, the industrious company filed 576 patents in 2007.

SURVEY SAYS

The other side of glamour

Company culture is unique, to say the least. "It's not glamorous like you'd think," observes one insider. Sources describe L'Oreal as "extremely French" and "political." "The company suffers from high turnover and miserable employees," adds a co-worker. Another source comments, "Imagine a mix of The Office with The Devil Wears Prada. You either learn to love it or hate it and there is no in between. Most people leave within 1 to 3 years." A compatriot says, "There are a lot of divas in the company, so you have to be able to handle that type of personality and work with it." One source in the UK mentions that the firm "has a very young and diverse atmosphere." There are some upsides, though -- one hire notes that "In all fairness, the company does have good benefits (including free products, half-day Fridays in the summer, good vacations)."
