ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Chip off the old Bain

London-based L.E.K. Consulting began as LEK Partnership, a small enterprise formed in 1983 by three former Bain consultants. In the beginning, LEK kept its focus close to home, serving clients in Great Britain. In 1993, the firm initiated a merger with U.S. consultancy The Alcar Group.  The newly merged international firm was dubbed L.E.K. Consulting. Today, L.E.K. employs over 900 people in 20 offices throughout the Americas, Europe, and the Asia Pacific region.

A business strategy specialist, L.E.K.'s clients range from startups to Fortune 500 corporations to government agencies, and includes some of the largest firms in the Asia Pacific region. According to the firm, it earns its keep by breeding loyalty: about 90 percent of its engagements are repeat customers or referrals from existing clients.

The firm's industry expertise includes aerospace and defense, agribusiness, aviation and airports, business services (such as outsourcing), construction and building materials, consumer products, energy and environment, financial services, government, health care, industrial products and services, life sciences and biotechnology, media and entertainment, natural resources, private equity, retail, surface transport and logistics, telecommunications, and travel and tourism.

L.E.K. SURVEY SAYS

"High quality" environment

Sources at L.E.K. describe a "nice firm" full of "smart people." One insider says it's "young," but most insiders rave about the "high quality" environment that's "open, friendly" and, above all else, "supportive."  Given that "half of the partners are women" in the Shanghai office, the gender balance is also pretty good, according to sources. So much so, that "a third of last year’s recruits [to the office] were women."

Work in home office, then rest and play

Most consultants at L.E.K. report that they very rarely work weekends, if at all.  "In most cases we don’t work over weekends.  You can put away all the work and enjoy the two days," explains a contact.  A colleague agrees, but admits overtime can creep into the schedule, "We try our best not to work on weekends, but there are inevitable late nights before case deliveries." On average, consultants tend to put in a working week lasting 50 to 60 hours.

Staffers also benefit, or suffer, depending on how you look at the issue, from limited travel.  "Associates almost never, ever travel," stresses one source when asked about the issue.  A colleague agrees, saying there's "almost no travel for junior employees." Another entry-level source says this is because "L.E.K. has very few on-site projects; therefore, there are very few travelling requirements." The firm notes that its associates, particularly those based in China and India, do sometimes travel for short-term field research and interviews, rather than being based on-site.

Tips from the inside

Two routes in

Globally, L.E.K. is said to recruit from the "top 20 MBA schools, including CEIBS, INSEAD, Yale and HBS."  Aside from CEIBS, in Asia Pacific, this includes Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM), Melbourne Business School and INSEAD Singapore. A full list of campus events is available on the firm's careers web site, as are recruiting e-mail addresses for each Asia Pacific office.

At the undergrad level in Australasia, schools the firm recruits from include Monash University, University of Canterbury, University of Melbourne, UNSW, University of Queensland and University of Sydney, as well as New Zealand's University of Auckland. In Thailand, staffers come from Chulalongkorn University. For Greater China schools, sources say the firm has offered places to candidates from Tsinghua, Peking, Fudan, Shanghai Jiaotong and Zhejiang Universities, in addition to staffers from the University of Hong Kong.
