SURVEY SAYS

Work hours and compensation

Most Kutak employees are happy with the fact that they tend to work fewer hours than other large firms. "There's no such thing as face time," one associate says. Still, associates know that they're expected to produce quality work. One attorney notes "I work a lot," but clarifies that "I don't feel like I have to give up my entire life for this job." Nonetheless, one insider states that "the billable hours expected from Kutak are the same and sometimes higher than comparable firms headquartered in larger markets."

Tips from the inside

Competitive hiring process

Overall, associates feel that the hiring process is very competitive at Kutak. "Grades are very important, but not the end-all," one associate says. Another attorney agrees: "a good fit into the firm's culture is extremely important." However, one Kutak attorney notes that "knowing someone [in the firm] can help" with the hiring process. As one insider reports, "interviewing is taken very seriously." Typically, an applicant may meet with as many as five partners during the interview process. Still, those who want a big-firm experience in the Midwest (or, more specifically, the Omaha area) put an interview at Kutak on the top of their list.
