ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

THE SCOOP

Born of a January 2011 merger between the southern-based Kilpatrick Stockton and Silicon Valley firm Townsend and Townsend and Crew, Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton's 550 attorneys have spread out from coast to coast and jumped to several other continents. The firm is particularly strong in intellectual property litigation, business law and financial dealings.

Relinquishing the And for the Ampersand

Kilpatrick's roots begin in 1874, when Atlanta lawyers Milton Candler and William Thomson hung their shingles in Atlanta, a practice which eventually evolved into Kilpatrick & Cody. In 1997, the firm merged with North Carolina-based Petree Stockton to form Kilpatrick Stockton. Kilpatrick was the first outside law firm retained by the Coca-Cola Company, one of Atlanta's largest businesses, securing the company's federal trademark back in 1893. With most of its offices located in the south, the firm also boasted a roster of clients including such well-known brand names as Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, Delta Air Lines, Inc., the Harley-Davidson Motor Company, and the Krispy Kreme Doughnut Corporation. By the time of its merger with Townsend and Townsend, Kilpatrick had also distinguished itself through its stellar patent group.

Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP SURVEY SAYS

Vault’s Verdict: Kilpatrick Townsend associates are still working through the growing pains of the latest merger, and a confusing compensation system and mixed messages from headquarters has some spirits down. But others say the firm's receptiveness to alternative scheduling, commitment to pro bono and top-notch work is worth it all.

Associate Life

Satisfaction
• “I am very satisfied. The partners with whom I work are excellent managers and teachers. I have been given a good mix of work including legal research, drafting pleadings, and of course some document review.”
• “I have been very satisfied at Kilpatrick because the culture of this firm is relatively relaxed, progressive, and fun-loving. I certainly work very hard, but the culture here is very collegial and makes work enjoyable. I have received sound mentoring and good opportunities to take on responsibility and to advance.”
• “The quality of work I get from clients continues to be very good, as it was with Townsend before the merger, but management's attitude toward staffing, associate development, compensation, and diversity has been thrown back to the stone age.”
• “The vast majority of the work I have done over the last year has been substantive in nature. Much of the decision-making for [patent] applications I've drafted or prosecuted has been pushed to my level.”
