Vault’s Verdict: If it’s patent litigation you’re after, Irell & Manella is an excellent place to be. Associates are given substantive and meaningful assignments early on, and are rewarded for their long hours with above-market bonuses. However, associates say there is little chance for making partner, and even finding a partner mentor can be an uphill battle.

• “New associates get thrown into the deep end often, which is great for those of us who want to become better lawyers. We also get paid well vis-à-vis many other firms.”
• “Interesting work, good people. The only complaints are that everyone has too much on their plate and our bonus compensation should be higher, given the amount of money that we are making for the partnership.”
