ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

A chip off the old block

Infosys Consulting was created in 2004 as a means of expanding Indian tech outsourcing giant Infosys' business offerings. Based around a model that offers increased value for its clients, IC is committed to making companies more competitive, and is prepared to leverage all the contacts its parent firm has to make this happen. A good deal of the firm's strategy is tied up in offering consulting on a global scale, in much the same way that Infosys helped pioneer global outsourcing - there's no reason that strategising and technical analysis of a company needs to take place on the client's premises, after all. And if it's going to happen on IC's premises, then why not their premises in India? Oh & and if IC's consulting activities should happen to coincide with the need for some outsourcing to help a client become more efficient? So much the better - Infosys can take care of that, too.

SURVEY SAYS

True to its country of origin

Even in locations abroad, the firm is very much an Indian company. A consultant in London reports that the "population is largely Indian in the office, approximately 90 per cent. The rest are local hires." The corporate culture is heavily influenced by the technical employees, since the consulting side of the business is still in a "nascent" stage, says the source. "Hence," a colleague points out, "working in consulting may not be that lucrative in terms of recognition. The delivery (technical people) call the shots." Some consultants are far more comfortable, however. Another Londoner calls the culture "quite open and value-based", while others attest to the firm's "entrepreneurial" nature.

Tips from the inside

A global perspective

Insiders say candidates at Infosys can expect one or two "screening interviews" over the phone, followed by an "an in-office interview with two to three people." They can also "expect free-form interviews," describes one staffer, "that will challenge their communication skills, analytical skills and problem solving skills, and [they are] an exploration of the candidates technical acumen." "Most of the focus is on an applicant's cultural fit and leadership," and the process "includes a global' interview, which tests the candidate's interest/exposure to global events."
