ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Good times and bad

The St. Louis-based firm of Husch & Eppenberger, founded in 1922, has eight offices across the Midwest, with just over 300 attorneys on staff. Although the firm has undergone steady growth, it has had some hard times recently. In March 2006, a group of the firm's estate planning team defected to a rival firm. There was also some bad publicity generated by a sexual harassment lawsuit, in which the firm's chief information officer was accused of harassing his assistant. The case was settled without Husch & Eppenberger admitting liability, and the offending CIO no longer works for the firm.

Husch Blackwell LLP SURVEY SAYS

Generally satisfied

Associates at Husch & Eppenberger say they enjoy their job and appreciate their firm. "I have been extremely pleased with the firm," says a Jefferson City attorney. "I have worked on meaningful litigation projects and have been given many opportunities to develop as a lawyer." An associate in Kansas City is similarly happy: "The work that I do is interesting and challenging. I have opportunities and experiences that many other young associates do not get." Lawyers get "great opportunity to have significant client contact and case responsibility early in [their] career." Any complaints tend to be about the profession, not the employer. "I find working at a large firm is generally less than fully satisfying," says an experienced associate in the St. Louis office. "As far as large firms go, though, I feel my firm is great and the best large firm I could be at."

Tips from the inside

Snobs need not apply

Husch & Eppenberger looks for "motivated" and "highly intelligent yet personable and charismatic attorneys" who can blend into the firm's culture, associates report. "Hiring seems to be focused on law students more than lateral hiring," reports a midlevel litigator. "The firm is looking for people who are intelligent, write well and have a great personality that fits with the firm. I believe a lot of focus is on personality and ability to deal with clients and co-workers." Another litigator echoes those views: "We look for associates who will fit in and get along with others -- personality and friendliness are big factors. Attitude and arrogance are big detractors -- candidates are routinely cut if they are perceived as snobby or arrogant."
