ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

THE SCOOP

After remaining DC-centric through most of the 20th century, Hunton & Williams ventured beyond the mid-Atlantic in a major way as the new millennium dawned, expanding in geography and roster size through mergers and internal growth.

A Standard Beginning, A Transcontinental Present

The firm now known as Hunton & Williams came to life in Richmond, Virginia in 1901. Before the decade’s end, the firm had stocked its client roster with banks, railroads, energy companies and utilities, including John D. Rockefeller’s Standard Oil (which Hunton & Williams continued to represent until the U.S. Supreme Court forced the company’s breakup).

H&W SURVEY SAYS

OUR SURVEY SAYS

Vault’s Verdict: Associates appreciate the chance to do real, independent lawyering at market-rate salaries, but are less happy with an opaque bonus policy and unclear path to advance within the firm hierarchy.

Associate Life

Satisfaction
• “The work is interesting, there are opportunities to be creative, and quality associate contributions and well-reasoned opinions are valued.”
• “While the work is stimulating and I very much admire and enjoy working with other associates, the potential for promotion and communication from the partners regarding same is terrible.”
• “Hunton does a really good job of having associates set goals each year, and the partners give the associates concerted ideas on how to meet the goals.”
• “I work with great people and have a lot of autonomy. The only real negative is the pressure of billable hour requirements in an up and down market.”
