SURVEY SAYS

Culture split

Although Honeywell is again profitable, insiders say it is still dealing with the aftereffects of the 2000 merger that virtually doubled its size.  “The company has been split culturally for a long time between the old Honeywell and the acquiring Allied Signal,” says an insider.  In particular, “the Allied Signal mentality,” with a focus on manufacturing, is “taking over.”  This has made the company more “short-term focused,” so projects that will result in higher profits in the next year or so are emphasized, and “longer-term payoff [doesn’t] matter.”
