ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Ever-popular with associates, Goulston & Storrs was once again rated the No.-1 law firm in Boston, according to The American Lawyer's 2004 Annual Associate Survey. Part of the firm's success undoubtedly stems from its pro bono commitment, which extends back to the early 20th century when partner Herbert Ehrmann served as junior counsel in the Sacco and Vanzetti trial.

SURVEY SAYS

Goulston associates have little but praise for the firm's culture. Lawyers socialize by "playing on the firm's basketball team, attending numerous socials or special events, or attending professional sporting events." Many praise the generally solid relationship between partner and associate, noting "there is a lot of sharing of knowledge that goes on among lawyers in different practice areas." Because the firm "provides many opportunities to socialize," some feel that "lawyers don't socialize outside the office much -- but they don't need to. The atmosphere is one that "fosters security and respect, not gossip." Associates believe that Goulston can be a good place for the non-traditional lawyer, as well. "We have openly gay partners and associates. It's not an issue here." However, one source notes that "we need more minority partners."

"Even with my children under the age of 3," says one attorney, "I feel that the hours are appropriate." Many laterals find the Goulston workplace a nice change from more intense firms.
