ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Wheels around the world

Ohio-based Goodyear, one of the world’s largest tire manufacturers, produces circles of heavy-duty rubber that can be found on automobiles, trucks, buses, planes, motorcycles, farm implements, and earthmoving and industrial equipment the world over.  Prior to 2007, the firm also made automotive hoses, belts and industrial chemicals but chose to divest its engineered products segment in July 2007.  Currently, the firm does business via four segments: North American Tire; Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) Tire (which previously operated as two segments—European Union, and everything else); Latin American Tire and Asia Pacific Tire.  The company has 61 manufacturing facilities in 25 countries and has more than 1,800 retail outlets around the world, as well as three research and development and three tire proving facilities.  In addition, the company is famous for the most famous dirigibles since the Hindenburg; its fleet of Goodyear blimps has been flying since the 1920s.

Goodyear SURVEY SAYS

Not so good in Goodyear

“The general rule at Goodyear is cut, cut and cut again,” states one informant.  Project budgets are tight, and expenses are avoided unless they are critical to operations.  This source adds, “Goodyear is very short-staffed and always has been. … Every time the economy blips or the CEO wants a few extra million on the bottom line for quarter close, out go a few more people.”  Another says, “[M]ost of us lived in fear of the next round of cutbacks.”  A third says, “Employees are a necessary evil.  Pay is very good (for Akron), but other benefits are slipping away.”
