Gibson Dunn SURVEY SAYS

OUR SURVEY SAYS

Vault’s Verdict: Though Gibson’s free market assignment system is not for the faint of heart, it helps to “weed out the jerks,” leading to considerate and respectful partner-associate relationships. Associates insist the firm’s conservative reputation is overblown, and they appreciate the firm’s permissive stance toward telecommuting.

Associate Life

Satisfaction
• “As a first-year associate, it is sometimes hard to become integrated into the team. The free market system, though it affords flexibility, can also add stress. Generally, a confident and outgoing person will have an easier time.”
• “I have received top-notch, substantive assignments from day one. The quality of attorneys here is unmatched, and the cases are cutting edge. Not uncommon to see our work on the front page of major newspapers or on 60 Minutes.”
• “This is a big firm so we work hard. That being said, I love the people that I work with and generally feel that although we do put in a lot of hours, my personal time is respected.”
• “Long hours, but great people and very fulfilling, cutting edge work.

YOUR CAREER AT Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP

Gibson Dunn believes that the successful integration and overall professional development of our associates is critical to our continued success as a firm.  We give our associates the freedom to chart their own path in our Free Market System, while still providing them with the support they need along the way to flourish as attorneys.  Our associates are considered valued colleagues at one of the most stable firms in the country.  In fact, we maintained record profits during the economic downturn, and more importantly, did not lay off a single associate.  We believe that each and every one of our lawyers contributes to the firm’s greatness, and empower our attorneys to make an impact through strong guidance, training, and mentoring.

Tips from the inside

Vault’s Verdict: Gibson looks for candidates with stellar GPAs who can also be self-starters. Associates say candidates must be assertive enough to thrive in the free market assignment system, but kind enough to meld with the Gibson culture.
