ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

With just 500 lawyers, Fried Frank is smallish by some measures, but it remains an international legal power that excels in corporate, tax, litigation and real estate work. The firm has a long transatlantic history: its London office, established in 1970, was one of the first European offices of a US law firm.

Fried Frank SURVEY SAYS

Vault’s Verdict: The firm earns solid marks for job satisfaction and firm culture, though insiders offer few specifics. While the hours can be long (“no surprise!”), no one is really complaining — perhaps that’s because lawyers are happy with generous salaries and optimistic about the firm’s future.

•  “The work is mostly M&A and financing, but as the department I work in is very small, I naturally get quite a broad exposure to different deals and transactions. My immediate boss happens to be excellent and the partners I’ve worked with so far seem fairly approachable. Plus the pay is very good!!” – Associate

•  “In growth mode — lateral partners and associates coming in.” – Associate

Tips from the inside

Vault’s Verdict: The more senior lawyers among our respondents rated the firm more selective than did the more junior associates. What appears to count almost as much as credentials in this small office is how well the candidate will fit into the culture.
