Lighting up Florida and beyondFlorida Power and Light Group has two main operating subsidiaries—Florida Power and Light (FPL) and FPL Energy. FPL describes itself as “the largest investor-owned electric utility in Florida.” The company serves upwards of 4.4 million customers, and by 2010, the firm expects to be serving 5.5 million customers. The second main subsidiary, FPL Energy, describes itself as “a leader in producing electricity from clean and renewable fuels, a world leader in the development and operation of wind power, and the largest generator of solar power in the nation.” In addition, FPL FiberNet, the firm’s telecommunications subsidiary, has Florida’s largest fiber optic network.
