ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Taylor made

North America's largest car rental company, Enterprise Rent-a-Car operates a fleet of more than one million automobiles, with branches located within 15 miles of 90 percent of the U.S. population. Perhaps most remarkable, though, is how steadily Enterprise has grown throughout its 50-year history; still a privately held company, ranked No. 21 on Forbes' Largest Private Companies in America list, Enterprise has never experienced a single downsizing or unprofitable year. The company is truly "Taylor Made" -- longtime CEO Andy Taylor is the son of Enterprise founder, Jack Taylor -- and the family's involvement doesn't look to be diminishing anytime soon. Enterprise still runs the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Foundation, established by Jack Taylor upon the company's 25th anniversary in 1982, awarding funds to charitable organizations nationwide.

SURVEY SAYS

Opportunities for Enterprise-ing young graduates

One graduate of Enterprise's management trainee told our survey that "as an entry level job, [Enterprise] is a great resume builder." Other grads agreed, saying that "I can't imagine anybody getting better experience of how to run a business" and "it gave me exactly what I needed, experience!" "There is always an opportunity to advance in this company," says a corporate account manager, but entry-level employees have to meet high standards, including a 90 percent customer satisfaction rate and a 30 percent sales record (selling car insurance to renters who often already have it).

Tips from the inside

A growing fleet

Job seekers should visit Enterprise's extensive career web site: www.erac.com. Here, they may search for open positions by location and job type. The company says most employees begin their Enterprise careers in the management training program, gradually rising through the ranks, although there are also opportunities for some administrative positions, IS professionals, accounting/finance, and part-time drivers and lot attendants.
