ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

A virtual leader

With an ever-expanding list of electronic game titles, Electronic Arts’s offerings range from football and simulated people to gory battles with animated aliens.  The Redwood City, Calif.-based entertainment software giant operates like a movie studio, with producers coordinating the work of artists, writers, animators, sound engineers, musicians, set designers and programmers.  Holding some of the most popular games in the industry, EA raked in $4.2 billion in revenue over the past 12 months, bolstered by its legacy titles such as Madden NFL, Need for Speed and The Sims, and the addition of the new shoot-‘em-aliens-up game Dead Space.  It develops titles across all video game platforms (47 as of last count) and maintains an online presence with gaming site Pogo.com.

Long hours ... to rack up experience points

Working at Electronic Arts is a lot like playing the games it produces—very fun and very intense.  “Because they let us have so much fun, we work like maniacs,” one insider says.  Another staff member reports that “about three times a year, I’ll work 80- to 90-hour weeks for a month.  Two years ago, I frequently worked 100-plus hours a week to get a product to ship, though I’ve lost some steam since then.”

Tips from the inside

You got game?

If you’d like to join the ranks of Madden, Harry Potter, The Simpsons, The Godfather and the rest of the colorful crew at EA HQ, direct yourself to https://jobs.ea.com, the company’s career website.  Here, job seekers will find a listing of open positions in the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia, or one can simply submit a profile.  Animators, character designers, storyboard sketchers and artists of other stripes are required to submit samples of their work in addition to the typical cover letter and resume—the specific guidelines for these submissions are available through the career site.
