ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Firms History

Dow Lohnes has been around for nearly 90 years, with its largest office in D.C. The firm has resisted the trend to merge with larger firms, instead remaining relatively small and focused, with fewer than 150 attorneys in its two offices. The firm's work centers primarily on the media, communications, information technology and higher education industries, and offers a broad range of sophisticated practices, including mergers and acquisitions, financing, tax reorganizations, government investigations, and both trial and appellate litigation. Dow Lohnes handles the full array of media issues, such as the application of copyright rules to internet file-sharing, First Amendment protection for reporting government probes and the regulation of internet access providers.

SURVEY SAYS

Happy with their work

"I like what I do, I would just prefer to do [it] for fewer hours a day, and in a place where the real estate is affordable." So says a fifth-year associate. Though colleagues agree about the quality of the work, if anyone else has real estate woes living in D.C.'s notorious market, they don't appear worth mentioning. A first-year IP associate pronounces his projects "very interesting," and says "I am doing the exact kind of work that I had hoped I would practice when I chose my firm." IP appears to be the happiest department overall, though a litigator claims "the more I talk to my former law school classmates at other firms, the more I realize how lucky I am to be at Dow Lohnes" (a sentiment that other associates shared).

Tips from the inside

Insiders speak

Like most firms, Dow Lohnes aims for the top: prospective hires should be "top students from the top schools" with "top grades." Other sought-after traits include "good writing skills" and participation in a journal/law review. The firm "knows it's competing with other large D.C. firms, so they try to get the strongest candidates early on." "Being well qualified in terms of your resume gets your foot in the door." At that point, the interview becomes an important arena for prospective hires to showcase their talent, and convince the interviewers that they are right for Dow Lohnes.
