ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

One of the largest

With five offices across the state, Dickinson Wright was recently ranked the third-largest law firm in Michigan by Michigan Lawyers Weekly. The firm's headquarters have been located in Detroit since the firm was founded in 1878. Connections to the city are strong -- the firm's chairman, Dennis Archer, served as Detroit's mayor for most of the 1990s. Long-term clients include Metropolitan Life Insurance, AT&T and Chrysler, which has been associated with Dickinson since the 1920s. Decades-long relationships are not unusual for this firm, as the old-school industries represented on its client list show: automotive suppliers, railroads and financial services firms. However, the firm is not just clinging to the industries that have served it well in the past. Several new practice groups have been formed, targeting cutting-edge industries. In 2005, for example, Dickinson Wright announced the formation of a biotechnology practice group headquartered in Ann Arbor.

SURVEY SAYS

Job satisfaction

Perhaps the best thing about Dickinson Wright, according to our contacts, is the "friendly, yet professional atmosphere." Associates enjoy working with "nice people who treat you as a professional." A litigator reports that "the work is usually interesting and challenging." But one source finds that "there has been a dramatic shift toward the importance of the billable hour, so there is less socialization and more working." In fact, it's the work opportunities (or lack thereof) that frustrate some. "The transactional work is good when it's available," says one associate, though "the firm has real difficulty finding enough transactional work for associates." Such concerns naturally color associates' attitudes toward their hours. While many insiders seem content, others claim there is "high pressure" to meet the firm's billing requirements, but not always sufficient work to do so. On the positive side, "the firm encourages all associates to work on pro bono matters" and credits up to 30 pro bono hours toward the 1,950 billable hour requirement.

Tips from the inside

Competetive hiring

Dickinson Wright associates say to expect the usual regarding the firm's hiring practices. "There are on-campus interviews, callbacks and a recruitment committee," says a junior associate. The firm conducts interviews at approximately 20 different law schools, ranging from Wayne State to the University of Michigan. The recruiting team also screens "hundreds" of mailed in resumes each year from candidates at other schools. Five of the firm's six offices hired summer associates in 2006, including both first- and second-years, nearly all of whom were extended offers to return to the firm.
