ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

July 2009:  A cautious outlook

Thanks to strong trading output and one-time charges, Deutsche Bank’s second quarter 2009 profit jumped 68 percent versus the same quarter a year earlier.  However, the bank’s loan portfolio remains troublesome.  It incurred €1.4 billion in bad loan provisions, a signal the effects of the financial crisis are not over.  Deutsche Bank also announced it will extend CEO Josef Ackermann’s contract until 2013.

Deutsche Bank SURVEY SAYS

Bring the results

“Like all investment banks, hours are long, and it’s all about results,” admits one director.  Other employees seem to agree with this assessment.  “Investment banks work you hard and long,” one weary employee in London tells us. “You’ll have to make sacrifices, and if it’s quality of life and a 9-to-5 work schedule you’re after, then this place is definitely not for you.”  On the other hand, if you’re a “glutton for punishment” and want to work in a “fast-paced, dynamic atmosphere”—as well as have a “mountain of responsibility from the word go”—then “climb aboard.”
