Dechert SURVEY SAYS

Vault’s Verdict: Although some trainees would prefer greater contact with clients, most believe that they get as much responsibility as they can handle. They express particular satisfaction with the flexibility of the firm’s six-seat rotation and the efforts made to accommodate each trainee’s interests. The work environment is described as “friendly and welcoming”, with most socialising taking place through firm-organised events.

Life as a trainee

•  “I work directly with clients and partners. I am happy with the level of responsibility I have, which is backed up by support as and when I need it.” – Trainee

•  “Job satisfaction has depended on the department I’m working in. Some departments are very keen to train trainees, allow them to take responsibility and to get involved. Others are less so and see trainees more as photocopying/takeaway-ordering monkeys.” – Trainee

Tips from the inside

Vault’s Verdict: A small intake makes for a competitive process, and the socially inept might have a more difficult time at this friendly, sociable firm. Do your research, trainees advise, and be confident (but not arrogant) during your assessment.
