ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

THE SCOOP

Eli Whitney Debevoise―a direct descendent of the inventor of the cotton gin―and William E. Stevenson founded their firm in New York in 1931. Debevoise wasn’t the only one with an interesting background; Stevenson was an Olympic gold medalist on the 1924 1,600 meter relay team. Francis T.P. Plimpton, whose name graced the masthead starting in 1933, was the father of famed journalist and writer George Plimpton.

Sophisticated Practice across the Globe

Debevoise's corporate department remains its largest, with M&A and private equity leading the charge.

Debevoise SURVEY SAYS

OUR SURVEY SAYS

Vault’s Verdict: There’s not much in the way of after-work socializing at Debevoise—and that’s just how the family-oriented associates like it. Although attorneys here love the collegial culture and commitment to diversity, some are worried about finding enough work.

Associate Life

Satisfaction
• “If I have to work in BigLaw, I want to work at Debevoise.”
• “As a new associate, I have had a hard time getting work, which leads to little or no personal interaction with people at the firm and a general sense of social and professional isolation. Yet the interactions I have had have been good, so I am optimistic that things will improve.”
• “As law firms go, I enjoy the culture here and feel it’s a good fit. It’s a collection of very intelligent, considerate people. That said, the hours are very difficult and trying.”
• “Debevoise is a great place to work. It is a truly collaborative and respectful environment. I am very happy with the cases I have worked on, which are substantively interesting and well-managed. My only point of criticism would be the lack of practice group structure in the litigation department, which sometimes causes inconsistencies in staffing.”
