ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Tops in Connecticut

It has been four years since Connecticut's largest and most profitable law firm merged with one of New Jersey's largest and oldest. Day, Berry & Howard combined with Pitney Hardin on January 1, 2007 to become Day Pitney, with nine offices along the Northeast Corridor. Founded as an insurance defense firm in 1896, Day Berry weathered the recession of the 1970s by diversifying its practice. Thanks in part to its niche representing clients among the many high-tech companies based in Boston and Hartford, Day Pitney topped the Connecticut Law Tribune 25 with a $122 million revenue in 2005 (which works out to a PPP of $530,000).

Day Pitney SURVEY SAYS

Family friendly but Some Gripes Over Billables and Compensation

Day Pitney reportedly cultivates “a very collegial working environment” with “plenty of paralegal support.” According to a tax lawyer, the firm “does a good job of providing sophisticated work in a family friendly environment,” while a colleague in the labor division deems the work “challenging, varied and very interesting.” A Bostonian, meanwhile, is less enthused: “I’m as satisfied as I am likely to be while working for a big firm. I’m not sure I would be more than moderately satisfied working for any big firm.” In Stamford, “the lawyers … are very friendly, sociable and have great senses of humor, which makes it an especially fun place to work,” while there’s “a vibrant social group among the young attorneys” in Hartford. Boston boasts an “open-door [policy] because of lean staffing of cases,” which fosters “collegiality among associates, and [among] most partners and associates.”

Tips from the inside

Looking for interesting people

Day Pitney typically invites "very smart ... quiet and hardworking" candidates to join the firm, and targets individuals who exhibit "leadership" skills and the "ability to work well in a team." The brass is also looking for "interesting people" with "a large array of interests and backgrounds," sources say. Prospects "must possess a certain degree of sophistication and 'polish,' even as first-years," explains an old-timer. The safest path to receiving a full-time offer-landing a summer associate gig-is "competitive because summer associate classes for each office [are] relatively small," and probably not a viable option if you don't have "strong interpersonal skills" in addition to the academics. That said, Day Pitney is "very open to hiring people from a variety of law schools"-in other words, the firm's "not just about 'Tier One' schools."
