SURVEY SAYS

Office atmosphere

Davis Wright Tremaine has, in the firm's words, "placed a high value on maintaining a highly collegial atmosphere of diverse, interesting and hard working lawyers." Respondents to our survey say that the firm is "laid-back," but some feel that the firm might even be too informal. "The firm is in danger of losing focus as it moves from [being a] major regional player to the national stage," warns a fifth year litigator. Most, however, like the "relaxed and open atmosphere" which encourages "diverse individual personalities. Though the culture can be "clique-ish," most say that the "lawyers really like each other and value working together." The firm manages to stay friendly "without any sacrifice to the level of professionalism." Some attorneys socialize outside the office, some do not. "Most have very active outside interests," says an intellectual property attorney, "so I would characterize the socializing outside the office as frequent but not constant." There are a "couple of uptight stiffs," but at least one attorney raves "I can't imagine being a lawyer anywhere else."

Tips from the inside

High competition

"Competition to work here seems very high," reports one source. Class rankings play an important role in the evaluation of potential associates. The ideal candidate is either "top of [the] class" at local and regional law schools, or from a "top ten law school with good grades." Even though the firm grants "lots of interviews," one associate notes that "very few [interviewees] make the cut." Instead, the "winnowing-out happens at the interview stage, not after hiring." The firm "hires summer associates who we expect to practice here," says an attorney, "and hires associates who we expect to become partners." DWT particularly likes candidates with "interesting experiences and backgrounds," and "a sense of humor goes far."
