THE SCOOP

Crowell & Moring was founded in 1979 by a group of attorneys defecting from Jones Day Reavis & Pogue, to create “a different kind of law firm.” When Jones Day tried to oust Eldon “Took” Crowell and his team of government contract lawyers, he left with a bang, taking with him a group of more than 50 attorneys—an event the Washington Post referred to as “The Split.”

Vault’s Verdict: As far as workload goes, Crowell Moring associates appreciate the quality but despair at the quantity. Recent growth at the firm and changes in compensation policy have led to some tension between management and the lower ranks.

• "Very engaging for a first-year, although hectic at times."
• "The work is great, the people are great, and the firm is great. But the number of hours required is the same as any other big firm, which does not cultivate job satisfaction."
• "The work is interesting and challenging, however based on how staffing is for deals (very lean) the number of hours worked do not match up to the salary."
• "It seems that increasingly […] the firm really wants and expects its associates to devote their lives to the firm and building it up, and if they have any time left over to develop themselves in areas outside of the the legal industry, so be it."
