Covington & Burling SURVEY SAYS

Vault’s Verdict: Associates appreciate management’s success in steering the firm through the recession without any redundancies, though some say that Covington’s American roots show more than they’d like (e.g., the US-centric training) and wish that the firm were better known in the UK. That said, lawyers and trainees enjoy interesting, varied work in a friendly, easygoing atmosphere. And if the money’s not quite top of the US market, it’s pretty close.

What Solicitors Say

•  “There is generally a good mix of work and lawyers are encouraged to maintain a broad experience base and not to specialise too early.” – Associate

•  “I am as happy being a lawyer here as I am ever likely to be.” – Associate

Tips from the inside

Vault’s Verdict: Among the qualities of a successful lawyer, Covington “rates academic excellence foremost and the ability to write and communicate clearly”, insiders report. But the firm doesn’t just want brainiacs, as “the London office is also very much about ’fit’”. Get on a vacation scheme, if you can, to experience the firm’s culture firsthand.
