ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Special ConEd

It is the city that never sleeps, but without Consolidated Edison Company (ConEd), all the night owls would be bumping into each other at every turn.  For more than 180 years, ConEd has been providing the energy that fuels America’s biggest city.  The regulated utility supplies electric service in New York City’s five boroughs (except a small area of Queens) and most of Westchester County, as well as natural gas service in some of those areas.  ConEd’s subsidiary, Con Edison of New York, owns and operates the world’s largest direct steam system, which benefits most of Manhattan.  One of the largest investor-owned energy companies, Consolidated Edison has more than $13 billion in annual revenue and at least $28 billion in assets.  Consolidated Edison’s nonutility operations include energy marketing, independent power production and fiber-optic telecommunications.

SURVEY SAYS

Steady does it

The environment at ConEd, says a Human Resources insider, “was an odd mix of congenial and combative.”  The “older population” has a “mind-set from the 1970s [that is] very change-averse.”  In addition, says one manager, “it is not a company where a proactive, innovative and creative person will necessarily be rewarded … It can be hard to advance without a mentor high[er] up, and can be hierarchical and political like most large companies.”  Furthermore, “education is not respected—most employees, if they have a degree, don’t have one worth its weight (i.e., it’s corporate sponsored or from an online institution).”
