ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Origins

Clark Hill PLC has seen a lot of Michigan. The product of a merger between two of Michigan's oldest and most respected law firms, Clark Hill now employs approximately 135 attorneys in four offices across the state and offers a full range of legal services, including litigation and corporate law, international law, real estate and tax. The firm traces its roots back to the 1890 founding of Shaw and Cady in Detroit. Shaw and Cady soon hired Sherwin Hill, who became an admiralty law expert. Meanwhile, in 1895 Joseph Clark formed a Detroit law partnership that rode the wave of the city's automotive boom to become a top automotive and transportation firm. The two Michigan powers joined forces in 1996, taking the name of two top partners.

Tips from the inside

On-campus

Clark Hill relies on on-campus interviews to recruit summer associates. In 2005, the firm interviewed at five schools -- Michigan State, the University of Detroit, the University of Michigan, Notre Dame and Wayne State University -- and hired five summer associates. (So, if you and your best buddy both want to work at Clark Hill, simple mathematics suggests that you and said buddy attend different law schools.) In addition to evaluating a candidate's academic performance as both an undergraduate and a law student, the firm also considers "journal, moot court, extracurricular activities and prior work experience."
