ABOUT THIS COMPANY:Heads, you win
Word of mouth has it that when petrochemical giants Chevron and Phillips (later ConocoPhillips) teamed up to form a split-down-the-middle joint-venture chemical firm in 2000, a coin toss decided the placement of company names in the new firm’s title. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out which executive won and opted to put their company’s heritage right up front, but it does take a modicum of intelligence—or knowledge, at any rate—to decipher what exactly it is the firm does. Chevron Phillips is one of the world’s leading producers of olefins and polyolefins, and suppliers of alpha olefins, styrenics, aromatics, specialty chemicals, piping and proprietary plastics. This is as good as gibberish to John or Jane Doe Public, so a breakdown of the company’s offerings looks a much like this: Chevron Phillips produces chemical products that are essential in manufacturing more than 70,000 consumer and industrial products. Those products include everything from packaging to synthetic motor oils, lubricants to soap, paint to plastic pipes and car gas tanks.
