ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Finance expert

Chapman and Cutler is all about the Benjamins. While other firms may spread themselves thin, becoming all things to all clients, Chapman has zeroed in on finance as its specialty. The firm's 200 attorneys are experts in all kinds of finance, from bankruptcy to credit card processing to project finance. Founded in 1913, the firm originally concentrated on municipal finance. That niche has proved successful -- the firm has been first in the nation for number of transactions for 25 consecutive years, handling some $9.7 billion worth of municipal bond deals in 2005. Chicago-area landmarks the firm has advised on include O'Hare Airport, Comiskey Park and the Oceanarium at the John G. Shedd Aquarium.

SURVEY SAYS

Good work and friendly

Our contacts are not unanimous in praising Chapman, but they come pretty close. A Chicago lawyer says, "The firm provides a great work environment." "The type of work and the people with whom I work represent the best things at the firm," declares a senior associate. Though many insiders appreciate "fantastic, high-profile work," apparently not all associates are so lucky. "Distribution of work within departments can be an issue," says one source, and another complains, "Not all departments are created equal."

Tips from the inside

Fitting in with firm culture

At Chapman and Cutler, "Grades and law school are always a factor, but the firm is most committed to finding people who fit well with the firm culture." The firm is looking for someone "smart, independent," "hardworking and not socially awkward." The candidate should also show "a strong interest in the type of work (finance-related) that the firm does." In fact, several insiders emphasize this last factor and suggest doing some research before the interview. A junior associate advises, "Since Chapman and Cutler is 'focused on finance' we are rather specialized. Therefore, a certain amount of financial background is usually needed or a strong interest in financial/transactional law needs to be demonstrated -- usually both."
