From turkey farming to futures trading, Cargill is the "biggest company you've never heard of.” As the second-largest private corporation in the United States (behind Koch Industries), Cargill has preferred to keep things private for more than 140 years. In fiscal 2009, the company reported net earnings of $3.33 billion on sales and other revenue of $116 billion, drawn from 75 business units in five major sectors: agricultural services; financial and risk management; industrial services; food ingredients and applications; and origination and processing. Its consumer brands include Diamond Crystal and Red Cross salt, reduced-sodium Salt Sense, Honeysuckle White and Shady Brook Farms turkeys, Sterling Silver Premium and Angus Pride meats, and Sunny Fresh egg products, although many of its products—like corn syrup, cooking oil, starches and sweeteners—are used as ingredients in the output of other corporations. The firm operates all over the globe, with major facilities in Asia, Europe and Latin America.

Once people get hired at Cargill, they tend to stay awhile. "Engagement is high and people tend to stay with the company a long time," observes one contact. Insiders praise the "solid Cargill culture," adding that "people [are] very friendly" but note that the office "can be viewed as conservative” and has “a kind of good ole boy mentality.” That said, Cargill has "very flexible work hours, [and the] ability to create [one's] own schedule."
