ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

History

It's been over 100 years, and Calfee, Halter & Griswold LLP is still going strong. The firm traces its roots back to 1903 Cleveland, when Robert M. Calfee arrived from Washington to start a firm with two partners. Calfee would soon go solo, but later took on other partners and saw his firm change names several times. Current name partners Edwin Halter and Bruce Griswold joined the firm in 1929 and 1950, respectively, and the firm took on its current name in 1974. The firm's alumni include a former commissioner of the Securities and Exchange Commission and George Voinovich, who worked his way up to mayor of Cleveland, governor of Ohio and U.S. senator.

Tips from the inside

The tops

In hiring summer associates, Calfee places an emphasis on both an "excellent academic record and strong interpersonal skills." Although the firm does not have any hard-and-fast GPA cutoffs, it "prefers" students in the top 10 to 15 percent of their classes and maintains a special fondness for students (both 1Ls and 2Ls) who have participated in their schools' law journal or moot court programs. In a typical year, the firm will conduct interviews at about a half-dozen schools and hire about the same number of summer associates. In its quest for the best candidates, the firm recruits from schools both nearby (Case Western Reserve and Cleveland-Marshall College of Law) and across the country (Duke and Georgetown).
