ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Loyal till the end

Founded in 1922, Cades Schutte is one of Hawaii's largest and oldest law firms. If there's one word that describes the firm best, it's loyalty - toward both clients and employees. Cades Schutte has never taken on a partner that wasn't first a firm associate, nor is it in the habit of gobbling up other law firms simply to boost its masthead. And Cades Schutte receives loyalty in return. Since its inception, no group of three or more attorneys has ever left the firm to form another practice. Those attorneys who do leave usually move on to careers of great distinction, including a federal judgeship, executive management positions in two of Hawaii's "Big Five" corporations and general counsel positions in two of Hawaii's three major financial institutions.

Tips from the inside

Summer associates, Hawaii style

Cades Schutte seeks "the highest-caliber legal talent" (i.e., "students in the top 20 percent of their class or those who have a 'B' grade average or better"). Because the firm hopes summer associates will become longtime members of its team, it also looks for candidates with "a strong commitment to permanent residence in Hawaii" and a connection with the state. Nevertheless, the firm does recruit outside the islands, particularly in California. Recognizing that the cost for a roundtrip ticket to Hawaii can be difficult for a law student to swing, the firm picks up the airfare for all of its summer associates and their families. Cades Schutte likes to emphasize the advantages of island life, so, when not trapped in the library or a deposition, summer associates can expect to engage in such extracurricular activities as golfing, hiking, horseback riding and surfing.
