ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Pure as the driven snow

When any firm styles itself a "pure play," you automatically know two things about it: first, that it's publicly traded, and second, that it has one core competency that, ideally, it does very well.  In Colorado-based CIBER's case, both of those things are true—it's listed on the New York Stock Exchange, and excels internationally at system integration consulting, which it supports with outsourcing capabilities, not to mention 92 offices around the world.  All of that has led to the firm working with some of the biggest names in the fields of communications, finance, health care, higher education, manufacturing, service/retail and technology, while it also has deep expertise in government projects at the state and federal level. CIBER SURVEY SAYS

You're on your own

CIBER's culture is reportedly all about independence, which some insiders appreciate. "I like the freedom I have to move forward in my position. We are not huge like Accenture, and therefore I am not competing against hundreds of other consultants. I have opportunities to move up quicker and some time to learn more," says a consultant. Some sources attest to the downsides of independence. Admits a manager, "I love 'CIBERspace.' If I had to say one negative thing it would be: Because I work 100 percent on an outside contract, I have little interaction with anyone at CIBER. At times I have problems or concerns about how to effectively deal with issues dealing with my work for our customer, and I have no one to network with at CIBER." Other consultants echo the complaint that CIBER's culture doesn't offer much in the way of cooperation and teamwork with colleagues. A source comments, "I work at the home office so [I] rarely interact with others at my firm."
