ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Not bad … not bad at all

With a hand in virtually every pie of the television industry (and more), CBS has emerged as the top network in the United States in terms of viewership and programs.  For six years running, it continues to hold the top spot over ABC, NBC and Fox (according to a 2008 Nielsen study), and has managed to build up its viewer base despite storm clouds hovering over the economic landscape.  It owns more than 200 stations and affiliates across the United States, premium cable channel Showtime and network channel The CW, publishers Simon & Schuster, CBS Interactive, an outdoor marketing company and production affiliates for film and TV.  All in all, not bad for a Philadelphia company formed in 1927 with only 16 radio stations to its name.

SURVEY SAYS

A television for every office

Recent hires say that they are “excited” about the network’s “steadily increasing ratings” and that they enjoy working in an “entertainment-oriented” environment that includes “a television in every office.”  While some divisions—sports, for example—are more “social” and “relaxed” than others, employees say that the “lean” organizational structure gives them the “decision-making power” they need to “formulate effective strategy.”  Unfortunately, implementing that strategy can be “difficult” because of a “slow-moving central bureaucracy,” and the “antiquated office equipment” can be “frustrating” as well.  Also, expect the hours to be long.  Says an insider: “On average I put in 60+ hours a week and usually work weekends.  You can choose more ‘normal’ hours but if you want to get ahead, you have to do what it takes.”

Tips from the inside

Network with a network

Although CBS does its business through a number of divisions (10 as of this writing), the company is kind enough to lump all those various subsidiaries into one job search function, available at www.cbscareers.com/main/index.aspx.  Clicking on a division will redirect you to a job search engine (outsourced or proprietary), where you can search for job listings or submit a resume.  Job seekers can build a profile on CBS’s career site, to be saved and updated as needed.  The company also provides a separate “Campus Recruiting” list for those who recently graduated where they can apply for apprenticeship programs.  For current students, CBS offers year-round internship opportunities that run 10 to 12 weeks per segment.  However, juniors and seniors must come from accredited universities and colleges, and submit a transcript and a writing sample.
