ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Locations and strengths

Founded in 1960, Burns & Levinson was ranked as the 19th largest firm in Massachusetts by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly in 2005. That should change for 2006, though; the firm's recent merger with Perkins Smith & Cohen brings the number of attorneys to 135. While the firm is based in New England -- with three offices in the Boston area and one in Providence -- it also boasts a D.C. branch.

SURVEY SAYS

No sweat

If you are a brand new law school grad looking to sweat your way to the top of a cutthroat practice, Burns & Levinson is not the place for you. The firm's atmosphere is "casual," according to one junior year associate: "Politics are not discussed, and people tend to stay out of your personal affairs." The attorneys' work schedules are relatively relaxed in comparison to other firms. "We usually work less than 70-hours a week," one associate explains, and on top of that, "as long as you are billing 175 a month the hours are totally discretionary." That isn't to say associates don't work hard, or take pride in their contribution to the firm's success. One real estate lawyer praises the firm as "quick to provide associates with client contact and responsibility." Perhaps this is because, as the same associate observes, the firm has "partners who appreciate good, hard work." This collegial relationship between partners and associates shows through in their daily interactions and informal mentoring. "I find the department heads are always making sure [my] work and life are going well" says an insider.

Tips from the inside

An arduous road

Like most Massachusetts firms, Burns & Levinson focuses its recruitment efforts on law schools in the Boston area, sending their hiring committee to conduct on-campus interviews. The process can be long and arduous: one successful applicant says "call backs included four interviews. It's exhausting to keep your A-game going for 3 hours. Not all interviewees get [time to eat] lunch." Burns & Levinson "prides itself on its personal approach to practicing law, and building strong attorney-client relationships is a priority." Potential associates should be "team players" who are able to focus on the bigger picture and "go beyond their traditional role" to help clients to the best of their ability.
