ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

We're No. 2! (or No. 3, depending on how one measures)

As it has clashed with Barnes & Noble, hoping to topple the No. 1 bookseller from its perch, Borders Group has battled on two fronts. It has concentrated on expanding its physical presence in the U.S. while building up its Internet business. The company operates about 1,100 stores around the world, including 500 Borders superstores in the U.S., 30 international Borders stores and approximately 530 Waldenbooks stores. (About 70 Borders and Books etc. shops in the U.K. were sold off in late 2007.) The group also owns Paperchase, a U.K. purveyor of stationery, cards and paper products.

SURVEY SAYS

Camaraderie

Almost everyone polled agrees this may not be the best time to seek work at Borders, given the uncertainty surrounding a possible alliance with Barnes & Noble and the nation's iffy economic climate. And typically of retail, hours are long, (yet schedules are "really flexible") with days spent on one's feet, and the "stress can be (a bit) much during peak hours." A sales manager in Connecticut relates that (as of March 2008) "they have cut the number of computers available, and hours have been cut for some weeks."

Tips from the inside

Crossing the Borders line

Borders prefers that applicants send resumes in response to specific job postings, though blind resumes are also considered. For a complete list of openings at Border's corporate offices and its retail outlets, check out the company's employment Web page (www.borders.com/careers). Borders' search function can slim the options by location, category, keyword or division. Jobs in the field, distribution centers and home office can also be accessed through links on the left-hand page border. Apply for positions online, or send in a resume to reserve a place in the Borders pool of potential hires.
