ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

THE SCOOP

Bingham McCutchen is a global law firm that has expanded by swallowing up smaller firms in cities across the United States, Europe and Asia, while luring talent away from domestic and international firms (often targeting specialists in niche areas such as bankruptcy and regulatory work).

Bigger & Bigger

With roots dating to the 1890s, Bingham trained its focus on New England clients for the bulk of the 20th century, resisting the urge to colonize elsewhere through the ebbs and flows of a dozen decades.

Bingham SURVEY SAYS

OUR SURVEY SAYS

Vault’s Verdict: Bingham associates are, by and large, a pretty satisfied bunch. They love getting market rate salaries while enjoying work/life balance and a collegial culture, and they appreciate the firm’s consistent efforts in diversity initiatives. While new formal training initiatives have been appreciated, however, associates say there is still some room for improvement.

Associate Life

Satisfaction
• “Bingham works hard to live up to its reputation as a firm that cares about the quality of its associates’ lives. This doesn’t mean we don’t work hard, but the partners go out of their way to take everyone’s personal lives into account.”
• “The work is very high-level and interesting, but my involvement on projects is inconsistent. Sometimes I feel like I’m a key part of the team, and other times like an afterthought. I worry that I’m not getting enough or the right kind of experience to develop my own practice.”
• “My work is generally interesting. I'm given a lot of responsibility on most (if not all) of my matters, and I like the people I work with.”
• “I’m very happy with my experience at the firm thus far. The people are friendly and very willing to help. My one complaint is there is not enough on-the-job training and mentoring. The firm tries to do training, but formal training is not the same as working closely with someone.”
