Tips from the inside

For some it's hard, for some it's easy

It might be tough to land a spot at Barnes & Thornburg for those who aren't "in the top 25 or 30 percent of their law school class" and can't boast law review or moot court experience. On the other hand, "for the right candidate it's easy," according to a midlevel associate. "Candidates with a high GPA, the right attitude, who are team players, have it made." The "right attitude" seems to entail enthusiasm, a "demonstrated work ethic" and a "demeanor that will fit with the firm environment." Accomplishments matter more than pedigree; as a litigator observes, "You need to have done well at your school, but it does not have to be a top-drawer school." Note to intellectual property lawyers: "Preferred candidates these days have PhDs."
