ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Broad reach
Baker & Daniels LLP has a broad reach -- from the Midwest to the Far East. Founded in Indianapolis in 1863, the firm remained small until the 1970s, when the first branch office opened in Washington, D.C. Other locations in Indiana followed, along with several subsidiary consulting businesses in Washington, D.C. The firm consolidated its three affiliates into one, B&D Consulting LLC, in 2006. In 1998, Baker & Daniels opened the doors on its first Chinese office in Qingdao, followed by a second office in Beijing. The China offices focus on representing businesses expanding into China, where clients include Lucent Technologies and Volvo Financial. In the United States, Baker & Daniels has more than 300 attorneys, concentrating in such areas as business, litigation, labor and employment, and intellectual property. The life sciences practice represents clients such as Eli Lilly and Company, Zimmer Inc., Guidant Corporation, Roche Diagnostics and the Purdue Research Foundation. Within its education law practice, Baker & Daniels has developed a subspecialty representing faith-based institutions, particularly Christian colleges.

Getting Hired
Tips from the inside
Requirements for getting hired
"Getting a job here really means nailing both the academic and personal aspects of the hiring process," says one Baker & Daniels associate. "You must have strong academics and nail your interviews." His colleagues agree that academic achievement is not enough; candidates should also demonstrate "ambition" and "personality." An interesting background "in work, volunteering, civic or political experiences" also helps. According to a litigator, "An applicant needs to be more than an excellent student; there should be something interesting that the applicant can contribute to the firm." One newcomer offers this assessment: "The firm really goes for candidates who are well rounded, intelligent and personable, not just GPA machines from highly regarded schools." That said, "GPA and class rank are certainly prime factors," and at least one contact "would be surprised to see students with a GPA below 3.0 being interviewed."
