ABOUT THIS COMPANY:
The U.S. outpost
BDO USA, LLP (formerly known as BDO Seidman, LLP) is the U.S. member firm of BDO International Ltd., one of the world’s largest accounting and consulting networks. BDO USA has more than 40 offices and more than 2,700 employees. It offers a complete range of services, including assurance, tax, transaction advisory, investment banking, and corporate real estate. The firm’s BDO Consulting division offers litigation, investigation, business restructuring, and valuation services. Through BDO Capital Advisors, BDO offers investment banking and services. The firm’s industry expertise includes real estate, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology; energy; not-for-profit; health care; manufacturing and distribution; financial services; entertainment; technology; and retail and consumer products. BDO’s roots go back to 1910 when accountant Maximilian Seidman and his siblings hung out a shingle as Seidman & Seidman in New York City. At the time, Seidman was one of just 2,200 CPAs in the country. As federal tax laws were established and expanded, creating demand for individual and business tax planning, Seidman’s business took off. In 1917, Seidman & Seidman opened a second office in Michigan, where the firm did brisk business with the furniture industry there. By the 1960s, the Seidman name had spread across America, and in 1963, it went international, joining firms from Germany, Canada, the Netherlands, and the U.K. to form an organization called Binder Seidman International Group (BSIG). This was changed to Binder Dijker Otte (BDO) in 1973, in honor of three European founding members of the organization; hence BDO International. The U.S. member firm retained the Seidman it inherited from its founder. The Seidman family was in charge of BDO Seidman until the mid-1970s, when managing partner William Seidman stepped down to work in Gerald Ford’s administration. He went on to a career at the FDIC under George H.W. Bush.
