ABOUT THIS COMPANY:
Building a war machineBAE Systems in its current form has been in existence for less than a decade. While the company claims a lineage that goes as far back as 1560 to the Royal Gunpowder Factory, it was during the mid-1900s that the firm made its name in aircraft. The world’s “second-largest global defense company” was formed through an amalgamation of some of the early-20th century’s most iconic aircraft manufacturers: A.V. Roe, de Havilland, Hawker Siddeley and Supermarine, which all came together during the 1950s to 1970s to form and add to the British Aerospace Company (BAC). The company that exists these days, BAE Systems, was officially born in May 1999, following the purchase of Marconi—General Electric’s military wing—which necessitated a change of identity as the firm took a huge stride into the global platform. The company’s products are identified according to groups identifying the sector the products operate in: air, sea, land (dealing almost exclusively with military gear) and civil (commercial aircraft and components).
